Active Stock: Why Apple (NASDAQ AAPL) Could Not Name Apple Watch As iWatch

Apple Inc (NASDAQ AAPL) surprised people when it decide to christen its wearable Apple Watch instead of iWatch. The reason behind this is because of a trademark. Back in 2008, Probendi director Daniele Di Salvo registered the iWatch as a European-wide trademark. Di Salvo explained his reasoning behind the name was “i” like a person or subject, watch as a verb.

Probendi director Daniele Di Salvo also hopes to soon launch his own iWatch. His device will likely run on Google Android 4.4 operating system. It will feature a square touchscreen, and GPS, accelerometer. Right now, he is looking for a manufacturer to develop these devices.

He recently talked with RTE Radio about his plans, “We have been contacted by some very important manufacturers in China about the possibility of manufacturing a smartwatch and selling them with the name iWatch. Discussions are still ongoing. We are good at software but hardware is definitely not our business but we are evaluating this request.”

Di Salvo initially launched Probendi back in 2007. The company created an iWatch which was designed to help different devices communicate with another.

Early last month, it was reported Apple filed for Apple Watch trademarks throughout Europe. There was a total filing of six patents, four of which included an Apple logo in front of the word Watch. The last two involved the words Apple Watch.

Smartwatches are the gadget of the moment. These gadgets are designed to work with mobile phones to enhance the entire mobile experience. Although many watches and other wearables were designed specifically for fitness buffs, some watches (namely the Apple Watch) which offers even more features.
