After a daylong outage that they’re touting out as some kind of failure in Supernodes, Skype has come back with more than just a mere set of apologies. Also, they’re making every inch of an effort to restore the system(s) to a normal state. The primary reason for this massive power outage is still unknown. Maybe someone tripped over a wire, maybe someone spilled the coffee somewhere, no one knows yet.

All that we’ve heard is that Skype had the outage problem linked to its Supernodes. Talking about Supernodes, they’re computers that act like a phone directory that manages all the contacts and information. Hence, you can fairly relate the impact of power outage against those computers – no power, no contacts available.

Skype’s CEO, Tony Bates, on his company’s behalf, spoke to all the clients through blog posts and the official YouTube channel. He said that almost 16.5 million users are back online, as the experts are working to restore the systems to their full capacity. By the way, Wednesday’s user count was only somewhere near 1.6 Million, you can already imagine the impact of this whole scenario.

Also, the CEO said that they have plans for building new Supernodes, so that a similar incidence can be avoided in the future on firsthand basis. The bad news is that Skype’s video and group chat servers are probably overloaded by now. It’s because the Supernode servers haven’t been fully restored yet, and while they’re working on them, other servers that were not meant for sharing load, are now fully cramped due to traffic diversion.

In the meantime, Skype is “investigating” the possibility of offering credits to paying Skype users (yes, many people pay to use Skype for voice calls to regular phone numbers, myself included) whose service was disrupted Wednesday, Bates said, adding that details for issuing the credits still needed to be worked out.
