According to the recent news, twelve main broadcasters have decided to create a standalone joint venture which will provide the possibility for them to evolve a new service of national mobile content. Such companies as ION Television, Fox, as well as NBC & Telemundo are going to offer TV spectrum that is expected to be repurposed in order to deliver the new service that will later will be operated in partnership with nine local broadcast groups, including, Cox, Belo, Hearst, Meredith, Raycom, Post Newsweek, Media General, Gannett, and E.W. Scripps, which created ‘Pearl Mobile DTV Company LLC in order to join the venture. According to the group, their potential market amounts to 150 million people in the United States. Also the participants will be able to offer their content to mobile devices, i.e. news from electronic as well as print sources, entertainment and sports programming, on-demand and live video. The service is going to use ATSC-M/H, which is considered to be the system of open broadcast transmission. It was created by the Advanced Television Systems Committee only for mobile TV. At present the group is looking for a dedicated management team for signing more spectrum, content as well as distribution deals.
It is claimed by the broadcasters that the new service will be able to compliment the FFC, which can be done by means of providing mobile access to video content. But still according to critics, such move can be induced by altruistic motives, moreover, it is considered to be a reaction to the proposal which says that some spectrum of broadcasters should be reclaimed for a big part of more mobile broadband networks.
