Google to Test TV Search

Google and Dish Network?  It could be true.  They are supposedly testing with Dish Network a new service that would allow Dish subscribers to search for shows via their home televisions set.  In addition, subscribers could search via sites that have online video, such as YouTube.

Google software would come pre-loaded on set-top boxes that would be automatically connected to the internet and would allow subscribers of Dish Network’s satellite TV to search for show lineups as well as online content by using a keyboard.

This service test apparently started last year, but only went as far as employees of Google and their families, which is why we haven’t heard of this until now.

Google, a leader in online searching, sees this new service as means of bringing their advertising, keyword and search, to the home TV audience because when a subscriber would search for their preferred show, they would, oops, come across display ads that Google would implement.  In addition, this set-top box would apparently function properly with the operating system of Google’s Android, which would allow this new service to be transmitted to a completely new market via mobile devices and Smartphones rather than just the home television aspect of the market.

TV and Internet have been trying to merge as one for a while now but have never really been able to get the job done for it to be wanted at all times although Microsoft and Apple already currently have set-top boxes that push their own services through the TV at home.

It isn’t just Google, though, trying to get in on this action.  Cablevision is currently testing a new service, just as Google is, and TiVo released a brand-new DVR last week that allows viewers to search for online video and content.

Will the new service that Google is trying to pull off with Dish Network be able to survive the already developed market industry?  Probably so or they wouldn’t be testing the service with the intention on getting new advertisements and content that will specifically adhere to television viewers.
