Intentions concerning the acquisition of Palm were announce on Wednesday. It turned out that HP would like to use WebOS software platform of Palm as it can serve as a driver. Actually, it can help grow in the business of smartphones as well as Internet-connected mobile devices like slates and tables.

According to Todd Bradley, executive vice president of Personal Systems Group of HP, such products as table-slates are considered to be new in the market, but they are able to provide new opportunities for consumers.

Primarily, HP’s mobile devices are based on operating systems of Microsoft. The company provides Windows netbooks and the Windows 7-based tablet known as Slate will soon be released. Also the company offers iPaq mobile devices that run on Windows Mobile.

Moreover, the company is thinking to offers Linux-based Android tablets. Actually, HP already sells a low-cost laptop, known as Airlife. It is based on Android and is available in Europe.

With the help of HP’s acquisition, the company hopes to get the end-to-end product. HP would be able to offer WebOS available with a suite of Web-based as well as customized applications, which can be used for tablets.

Having WebOS, HP gets control over its own destiny.

Although HP has sold Windows Mobile devices, the latest software version of Microsoft, i.e. Windows Phone 7, requires sticking to a range of requirements. Moreover, it is necessary to rewrite existing applications in order they could operate on the new OS. Having Palm, there is no need to do something as hardware and software are already integrated. As a result, HP products will appear in the market quicker.
