Sony Jumps Into The 3D Battle

If it’s not one battle…it’s another!  This time, it’s with 3D televisions.  Panasonic, LG,  Vizio, Samsung, Sony – who is next?

Not only has Samsung had an announcement to make about their new production line of 3D televisions for the United States, but Sony has disclosed that they, too, will have 3D TV’s this year.  Their first shipment will be in Japan on June 10 with other countries and regions coming shortly after.

Panasonic is the first to unveil the 3D televisions, which will go on sale tomorrow in Best Buy retail stores within the United States.  In addition, May holds true for LG’s 3D TV’s to be put on the shelf with August holding solid for Vizio’s production lineup of 3D TV’s.

In Japan, the first model for Sony’s 3D TV’s will boast a 46-inch screen and be sold for 350,000 yen, which is equivalent to $3,875 in the U.S.  When purchasing this 3D model TV, two pairs of 3D glasses will accompany it.

These manufacturing companies are creating a huge production line of 3D Televisions with the increase in popularity of 3D movies; however, this is in the theaters – how many people will be interested in having 3D capable televisions in their home and more importantly, how many people will be interested in forking out that much cash for the TV?  Some will, of course, but is that what Sony is hoping for?

Well, not really.  They already have a Playstation 3, which is capable of playing 3D games and videos (And yes, there is hype about the creation of 3D games, which will likely become available about the same time as the Sony 3D TV’s), and this is where they are hoping their sales come in at or at least in the beginning.  Many addictive gamers will be more than happy to fork out the cash to have that extra adrenaline rush when playing their video games.

Regardless of how the sales are made or where the sales come from, Sony Corporation feels that the production of these 3D TV’s will boost their sales for all of their Sony products from digital cameras to video games.

Will you be one to purchase a 3D TV from Sony when it comes available?  And are the 3D TV’s truly the next generation of technology?  Will it have as huge an impact as the transition from black and white to color televisions did back in the day? Only time will tell about global demand.
