Sprint Nextel rolled out a smartphone, which features a twin set of touchscreens. The mobile device is called the Echo. It is manufactured by Kyocera Corp.
The new handset is enabled with two 3.5-inch touchscreens which can form a pseudo-tablet design. Users are provided with an opportunity to accomplish tasks on the two screens and even drag items from one screen to the other.
The Echo is based on Google’s Android operating system. Moreover, it uses a pivot hinge that lets tuck one screen under the other. As a result, it can transform into a more conventional touchscreen handset. The mobile device will hit the market in spring for $199.99.
It is hoped by the mobile carrier that the unique design of Echo will be able to drum up more attention. In fact, the carrier currently needs more high-end devices in order to replace its old phones, such as the Samsung Epic as well as the HTC Evo.
According to Daniel Hays, it is critical for Sprint to offer a new halo device as it will help maintain the company’s momentum.
The Echo was announced by Dan Hesse, Sprint Chief Executive at an event on Monday night. The company sent invitations, teasing that the company has something to show. Hesse claimed that the Echo has an ability to handle multiple tasks.
The largest advantage of Sprint, i.e. fourth-generation wireless service has been steadily evaporating as its competitors start to offer their own next-generation wireless services. Last year, the mobile carrier introduced the Epic and Evo 4G. They were touted to be the only mobile devices which feature 4G. The handsets were critical to the company as it faced contract subscriber losses.
Sprint has recently released the HTC Evo Shift. It is a $150 handset that is created to appeal to more consumers. While the Evo Shift uses the 4G network, the new Echo is a 3G handset.
Still there will be a tough competition as Sprint’s competitors are preparing a range of competitive devices.
