After a calamitous World Cup campaign in Brazil, Spanish football enthusiasts will be grateful for the salve that is the return of the La Liga. The annual Super Cup kicks off the new club season in style as Diego Simeone and Atletico seek to inaugurate the daunting task of defending their La Liga crown against a reinforced Real and Barca this season by scoring an early victory over their city rivals in the Super Cup first leg in the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.

A victory would also provide Simeone’s squad some semblance of revenge after their painful loss to Ancelotti’s Real in the Champions League Final in Lisbon. On that occasion a Sergio Ramos header levelled the game that Atletico had held for 92 minutes at the death, forcing a period of extra time that enabled Real to secure their much fabled la decima.

But for Real, a team that has added the likes of Toni Kroos and James Rodriguez at considerable expense this summer, nothing less than a victory to back up their European Super Cup triumph over Sevilla in Cardiff will suffice.

Real & Atletico Match Preview

Both Real and Atletico will be keen to take victory on Sunday. Though some style the Super Cup as no more than a glorified friendly, Atletico’s strong showing against Barca in the tie last season (they lost out on away goals) set the tone for the subsequent course of their remarkable league winning campaign.

In spite of their disappointment in Lisbon, the scale of Atletico’s achievement last season cannot be underestimated. Atletico Madrid became La Liga champions for the first time in almost two decades. They had shattered the Classico side’s sterile duopoly atop the Spanish League for the first time since Rafael Benitez’s Valencia side won in 2003-04. Simeone’s achievement may be gauged by noting that over the previous five seasons the points difference between Real or Barça in first place and the third placed team in La Liga was an astonishing 24, 39, 25, 28 and 17 points.

Remarkably this was achieved operating on a fraction of the budget of the Classico sides. Atletico have been chronically forced to sell their star players to sustain the running of the club. These have included Fernando Torres and Sergio Aguero pre-Simeone, and Radamel Falcao who moved to Monaco for a reported €60 million during the summer. Where Atletico’s annual turnover for 2013 was a modest £89 million, Real Madrid and Barcelona’s was in excess of £500 million; and where Real paid a fee in the region of €90 million on Gareth Bale in the summer and Barcelona invested a similar amount in Neymar, Atletico’s gross transfer spend was in the region of €30 million.

A similar paradigm persists to the present. Where Atletico have spent €95 million this summer on eight new players, Real essentially dropped that figure on James alone. Atleti have countered the departures of key players such as Diego Costa, Felipe Luis and Thibaut Courtois by signing stars including Antoine Griezmann, Mario Mandzukic, Jan Oblak, Raul Jiménez, Guilherme Siqueira and Miguel Moya. Repeating the heroics of last season though seems almost impossible. Real looked imperious against Sevilla last week; Kroos and James look made for Los Merengues.

With a first XI worth almost €500 million it is imperative that Ancelotti makes his mark on the domestic league in Spain this season. That process begins by defeating a difficult Atletico side on Tuesday night.
